Blind Date, Part 2

sunthrutreesWalking under trees in the park during that hot Summer helped clear my mind about the world around me. I came to realize it was all a part of God’s Creation. Science could explain how it was made and how it works, but science has yet to actually create anything brand new. We’re good at taking what God made and changing it into something else. Like little boys, we break things or knock them down and then try to make something else of the pieces. Sometimes for bad, sometimes for good. But, we still do not make anything brand new under the Sun.

The tall, majestic trees with their dense canopies providing shade for me as I walked the park were all of God’s Design. The atheist in me could understand how these particular trees spread and grew. How they shed their leaves during the Fall and weathered the Winter’s snows and freezing temperatures. Science can explain the process of leaves changing colors, but can’t make leaves. Through science we can cultivate trees, and distribute them. We can encourage, by a hit or miss process of picking winners and losers, trees with desired variations. Still, science cannot create a tree from scratch. Only God can make things “from scratch”. Big corporations making use of many people trained in the various sciences can produce technological marvels such as smart phones. But really, all they are doing is re-arranging God-created elements of the universe into something different. And it still has to follow the laws of the universe. All the physical laws of the universe somehow work together, and yet science does not know how they came about. Though science keeps growing in knowledge, it does not know everything about the universe. We can only name and try to understand these wonders of God’s Design, and that is what finally cracked my last shell of atheism. I could no longer ignore that God was behind everything I studied or tried to understand.

Psa 19:1 The heavens tell about the glory of God. The skies announce what his hands have made. (ERV)

Science was therefore not the answer. Only God was the answer because He was also the author of all creation, of all the universe. The Holy Spirit in me urged me to study His Word for the answers to questions I had. I came to better understand what Jesus did on the Cross for all of us. He alone gave us a way to being saved from our sins and having an eternal life with God. The alternative for atheists and others is grim and I did not want that. My love for the Lord Jesus grew and grew, and my love for my future wife also grew. Sometimes the two loves intertwined and other times they seem to be separate. But God was behind both. In the end, I accepted Jesus as Lord of my life and became His, and my “blind date” became my wife.

My date with my future wife turned out to be anything but blind, and everything to do with seeing God and His handiwork in everything around me. He wants only the best for me. He provided over the years for me and in looking back I can see the many times He guided me and corrected me. I now love to sing, off-key, but with emotion, that great hymn “How Great Thou Art” and its resounding refrain:

“Then sings my soul
My Savior, God, to Thee
How great thou art
How great thou art
Then sings my soul
My Savior, God, to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art”

Amazing grace, how sweet thy sound.

Thank you, John. You did remind me of an old joke. It seems scientists had gotten together and decided they to could make a man from dirt. As they began, they heard God say, “Ah, Ah, get your own dirt!”
