Hole Redeemed

Commentaries say Thomas was able to put his finger into Jesus’ side wound. Remember it was made by a spear while on the Cross! So, it would not be a small or shallow wound. Apparently, Jesus, though resurrected from death to life, still bore the raw newness of healed wounds.

Many years ago, my wife and I visited her father’s house. While we slept in their bedroom, the ceiling tiles suddenly fell upon us. The rain from the storm had leaked through the roof and completely soaked the tiles. The tiles became too heavy for the nails that held it up and it all came crashing down upon us in the bed! Mind you, long nails were used, not screws nor staples and though my wife escaped unscathed, I was punctured in my leg by one of the long nails. I thanked God for his protection, for not allowing nails in those tiles that crashed down on us, to puncture our heads and bodies and causing death.

As it was, I was rushed to the emergency room that night for I had a sizeable hole in my thigh. Since I went into shock, it was not bleeding, but this wound was not going to heal on its own. I was treated for potential septis, and after it was cleaned out, and bandaged I was allowed to go home. Indeed, the next day we kept to our prior plans and we drove all the way home, about 3-4 hours. At home I remained on antibiotics, but was otherwise not too uncomfortable.

The ceiling crash left me with a hole which took many years to fill, and to this day it is still an indentation. You can see where I was once wounded. The memory of being injured while sleeping almost haunted me, making me always check ceilings for cracks or damage. Nowadays I don’t worry anymore about ceilings. Just like we don’t worry about chairs falling apart when we sit on them. We can have a certain amount of trust in things.

But, we can fully and absolutely trust Jesus as our Savior because He arose from the dead on that third day, nearly 2,000 years ago. The message of Easter is eternal life with God is possible by faith in Jesus. If you don’t trust anything at all, at least put your faith and your trust in Jesus! Amen.
