Gossip

I am sad for my country. There is far too much hate and not enough love. People are turning away from God with the result of a country going down the drain. If you read the news you know about sex scandals. It seems all of our country’s leading cultural and political institutions of society are rampant with scandal. Whether it is Hollywood, Sports, News Media, Politics, or Education, we are hearing more and more about sex scandals. No doubt these are only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Sadly, some of the reporting amounts to no more than gossip or rumor. Other reports are no doubt true. But, whatever happened to our cherished laws and courts of law where people are innocent until proven guilty? It seems we are now a nation of gossips and mob rule, destroying innocent people lives along with those who are guilty?

Hate, gossip, slander is only a few things of what happens when you don’t live for God. When you think you are never wrong. There are, for example, so many ways to do the wrong thing when it comes to sex. I will not detail them here.

Ephesians 5:12 “For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret.” (ESV)

But, our news media compete with each other to report every bad news in great detail. They themselves have shared in these recent scandals. Rather than being news reporters, they have become troublemakers, focusing on hate and not on love.

Proverbs 16:28 “Troublemakers are always causing problems. Their gossip breaks up the closest of friends.” (ERV)

The problem with gossip, including reporting news of bad things such as these recent sex scandals is that it encourages more of the same.

Proverbs 26:20 “For lack of wood a fire goes out; Without gossip, a quarrel dies down.” (WEB)

And, oftentimes, whether through sloppiness, incompetence or evil intention, the news media will report incorrectly, and then be slow to reluctantly correct themselves.

Proverbs 14:21 “It is wrong to say bad things about your neighbors. Be kind to the poor, and you will be blessed.” (ERV)

This results in innocent people’s lives being destroyed. We have a court of law system to judge people based on facts, not fiction. Too many people are gossips with evil intentions. They will say anything to hurt others and to help themselves.

Psalms 41:6 “When someone comes to visit, he pretends to be friendly; he thinks of ways to defame me, and when he leaves he slanders me.” (NET)

Such people who lie and make false claims are evil gossips. They do not know God and care only about themselves.

Romans 1:29 “They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips” (ESV)

So I am sad to see the rampant sin of gossip in our American society, and it is happening across the board in all our “esteemed” national institutions. If you agree, pray for a revival of the Church, for people to seek God and guidance.  Maybe then we will stop being a nation of gossips and turn to showing love and not hate, and blessing others with what we say and do.
