WWJD? “Driving”

Back in the 1990’s, “What Would Jesus Do?” became a popular slogan and it became commercialized. The slogan appeared on everything, it seems, and one could purchase wrist bracelets with W.W.J.D.? emblazoned on it. It was meant to be worn as a reminder to a believer to pray for wisdom when it was not clear as what to do. What would Jesus do about driving a car?

Having said that, what are we to do about the arcane daily task in life (for many people) of driving a car to get somewhere? What would Jesus do about driving a car? Obviously, in his time on earth there were no cars. People mostly walked, or if they had money enough, they might own a donkey, and if rich, a horse. Today, it takes little more than a hour to get to any place in Holy Land by car on a highway. Back then, some 2,000 years ago, it took many days of walking. For example it most likely took Mary and Joseph about a week of walking to get from Nazareth to Bethlehem, or about 90 miles.

So much for the big change in the technology of transportation! Let us just say we are spoiled by the availability of cars and our road system. So many people drive that we frequently have traffic jams and backups. On such crowded roads, accidents are a frequent result of someone making foolish decisions of driving such as speeding.

WWJD? What would Jesus do if he was driving? He would observe all traffic laws for one thing. He would be patient with speeders, and other lawbreaking, chaotic drivers. He would drive defensively, even though he could clear the road in front of him with a prayer. The world drives in a hurry and woe to those who get in their way.

Set the example. Obey traffic laws. If one can’t obey simple traffic laws designed to help everyone, what law will we obey? Breaking of even simple traffic laws will sooner or later lead to breaking more severe and different kinds of laws. Sin has a way of spreading into every part of one’s life. Like Jesus, we pray for wisdom and faith in obeying good laws. We are not perfect in this life, but we can grow into becoming mature followers of Jesus.
